June in the GCC has traditionally marked the close of the active business season – a moment to wind down before the summer heat sets in. For years, the Middle East Event Show (MEES) served as that final industry milestone: the last major gathering, the place where the season wrapped up and informal accolades were handed out. This year, MEES has been rescheduled to August – shifting from season closer to season opener. The calendar has moved, and with it, the entire rhythm of the market.
But a quiet June is not an empty one. This week’s picture tells a different story: the region is preparing. Methodically, on every front.
While Everyone Watches Football
FIFA World Cup 2026 is live right now – the final is scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey. For the GCC, this is not just a sporting event: hospitality is running on corporate screenings, fan zones, and domestic tourism. Hotels that might otherwise be idle are operating at capacity with a different kind of guest. The summer slowdown is relative this year.
The Hotel Industry Celebrated Its Best
On June 10, the third annual GM Awards ceremony took place at JW Marriott Marquis Dubai – the region’s only awards programme dedicated exclusively to hotel general managers and senior leadership teams. More than 300 industry leaders attended, with 23 categories drawing over 500 nominations. The industry came together to recognise those who have held the line on standards.
Key winners: GM of the Year: UAE – Rahul Sharma (One&Only The Palm). GM of the Year: Resort – Werner Anzinger (Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai). GM of the Year: City Hotel – Benjamin Ackhurst (Mandarin Oriental Downtown Dubai). Excellence in F&B – JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai. Excellence in Guest Experience – Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat. Commitment to Sustainability – Al Maha, A Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa.
Organised by ITP Media Group and Hotelier Middle East. Full winners list at hoteliermiddleeast.com
Major Projects Never Stopped
Wynn Al Marjan Island – the UAE’s first integrated resort with a gaming licence, valued at $5.1 billion – continues to be built. There were logistical challenges with material deliveries, and Bloomberg reported a possible modest delay to the opening timeline. But CEO Craig Billings confirmed: shipments have been rerouted through alternative ports, and more than 22,000 workers remain on site. Spring 2027 remains the target.
The Market Is Operational
Jack Wilson, UAE Regional Director at -45dB, conducted 53 business meetings during recent months of uncertainty. His observation captures the market mood precisely: the industry focused on what it could control – maintaining relationships, preparing briefs, building contingency plans. RFPs kept coming. The market is in working mode, and ready to accelerate.
The First Major Signal – This Week
The Future Hospitality Summit Saudi Arabia 2026 opens in Riyadh on June 22–24 – the region’s premier investment platform for the hospitality sector. Last year’s edition brought together 1,100+ industry leaders and generated over $1.6 billion in business opportunities, with 254 investors managing $5.61 trillion in assets. This year’s focus: recovery strategies, resilience, and growth horizons. For the entire region, this is the first serious indicator of business sentiment heading into the active season.
Autumn is already being planned. The region is ready.
